CGI (Common Gateway Interface) - A set of rules that describe how a Web Server communicates with another piece of software on the same machine, and how the other piece of software (the 'CGI program') talks to the web server. Any piece of software can be a CGI program if it handles input and output according to the CGI standard.

cgi-bin - The most common name of a directory on a web server in which CGI programs are stored. The 'bin' part of 'cgi-bin' is a shorthand version of 'binary', because once upon a time, most programs were referred to as 'binaries'. In real life, most programs found in cgi-bin directories are text files -- scripts that are executed by binaries located elsewhere on the server. While most programs using CGI are stored in this directory, it is not a requirement for using CGI.

Client - A software program that is used to contact and obtain data from a server software program on another computer, often across a great distance. Each client program is designed to work with one or more specific kinds of server programs, and each server requires a specific kind of client. Cold Fusion - Cold Fusion is a scripting language for web designers that want wish to do advanced development and/or database interfacing. Cold Fusion supports MS Access, SQL, dBASE, FoxPro, and Paradox databases.

Contact Record - In the case of many registries, contact information for technical, billing and administrative purposes are maintained in their database. It is important to keep your contact records updated to ensure that billing and renewal can proceed without problems.

Cyberpunk - Cyberpunk was originally a cultural sub-genre of science fiction taking place in a not-so-distant, dystopia, over-industrialized society. The term grew out of the work of William Gibson and Bruce Sterling and has evolved into a cultural label encompassing many different kinds of human, machine, and punk attitudes. It includes clothing and lifestyle choices as well.

Cyberspace - Term originated by author William Gibson in his novel Neuromancer the word Cyberspace is currently used to describe the whole range of information resources available through computer networks.

Calendars - Web-based calendars are a great way to share information and promote events or appearances.

Catch-all mailbox - A catch-all mailbox is a Business Email feature that allows you to receive email sent to your domain that might be misaddressed or misspelled (for example, bob@ instead of robert@learn2yoga.com) - even mail sent to email addresses at your domain that don't exist - rather than having the email "bounced," or returned to the sender. Comment - A comment is a note appended to an entry in a blog. Comments are generally posted by readers of the blog but can also be added by the blog owner. Learn more about blogs.

Cookies - A cookie is a small amount of data that can be transmitted by a web server to your browser when you visit a web site. Web sites use cookies to "remember" details about you, such as your user name or site preferences, in order to personalize your experience on that web site. Counter - A counter is a program that you can set up to keep a tally of the number of people who have viewed that page. You can make your counter viewable by your site visitors or invisible, if you simply want to keep track of your page views. The Counter add-on allows you to easily add a counter to your web page. Cron Job - A cron job is a command available to Unix system users that makes possible the automated execution of a task at predefined time intervals. One might set up a cron job to create hourly backups of a database, for example, or to send daily emails. Yahoo! currently does not support the use of cron jobs, but we hope to offer this feature with your plan in the future.

CSS - CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a language used to define the presentation of documents written in HTML and other markup languages. Web developers can use CSS to control the display of a page or site (its layout, fonts, colors, and more) without having to change its structure or contents. The flexibility offered by CSS makes it easy to change the look of an entire site or page with just a few changes.

Custom Error Pages - The Custom Error Pages feature allows you to personalize the page that appears when your site visitor encounters a problem while viewing your web site. You can use this tool to help eliminate your visitors' confusion by explaining how to remedy the issue. For example, when a visitor tries to view a page that you have deleted, he will typically encounter a generic "404 not found" error. With Custom Error Pages, you could replace this message with friendlier directions to a new page. Similarly, you might replace the basic "401 authorization required" error that occurs when a visitor enters incorrect sign-in information on a password-protected page with helpful instructions and contact information.
