A Record - An A record is part of the DNS zone file. It is used to point Internet traffic to an IP address. For example, you can use an "A record" to designate abc.yourdomain.com to send traffic to your web site at IP address 1.2.3.4.
Access - Access® is published by Microsoft is an easy to use and highly integrated database creation and maintenance software. Capable of online databases, the software is supported with the any
CyPace Hosting Windows VPS plan.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) - A method for moving data over regular phone lines. An ADSL circuit is much faster than a regular phone connection, and the wires coming into the subscriber's premises are the same (copper) wires used for regular phone service. An ADSL circuit must be configured to connect two specific locations, similar to a leased line. A commonly discussed configuration of ADSL would allow a subscriber to receive data (download) at speeds of up to 1.544 Megabits per second, and to send (upload) data at speeds of 128 kilobits per second. Thus the 'Asymmetric' part of the acronym. Another commonly discussed configuration would be symmetrical: 384 kilobits per second in both directions. In theory ADSL allows download speeds of up to 9 megabits per second and upload speeds of up to 640 kilobits per second. ADSL became the standard to replace expensive ISDN connections, allowing higher speeds in cases where the connection is always to the same place.
Anonymous FTP - Anonymous File Transfer Protocol allows the public to log into an FTP server with a common login (usually "ftp" or "anonymous" and any password (usually the person's e-mail address is used as the password). Anonymous FTP is beneficial for the distribution of large files to the public, avoiding the need to assign large numbers of login and password combinations for FTP access.
Applet - An application that can be embedded in an HTML page. Applets differ from full-fledged applications in that they are not allowed to access certain resources on the local computer, such as files, peripheral devices (modems, printers, etc.). Applets are prohibited from communicating with most other computers across a network. The current rule is that an applet can only make an Internet connection to the computer from which the applet was sent.
Archie - A tool (software) for finding files stored on anonymous FTP sites. You need to know the exact file name or a substring of it.
ARPANet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) - The precursor to the Internet. Landmark packet-switching network established in 1969 by the US Department of Defense as an experiment in wide-area-networking that would survive a nuclear war. No, Al Gore did not invent the internet.
ASP - Active Server Pages (ASP). ASP files, which provide Web developers with an easier, faster, and more powerful way to build Web applications, are regular HTML pages with embedded scripts. These scripts can be written in any language and processed by the server when the file's URL is requested.
ASP - Application Service Provider. An application service provider (ASP) is a business that provides computer-based services to customers over a network. Software offered using an ASP model is also sometimes called On-demand software or software as a service (SaaS). The most limited sense of this business is that of providing access to a particular application program (such as customer relationship management) using a standard protocol such as HTTP.
The need for ASPs has evolved from the increasing costs of specialized software that have far exceeded the price range of small to medium sized businesses. As well, the growing complexities of software have led to huge costs in distributing the software to end-users. Through ASPs, the complexities and costs of such software can be cut down. In addition, the issues of upgrading have been eliminated from the end-firm by placing the onus on the ASP to maintain up-to-date services, 24 x 7 technical support, physical and electronic security and in-built support for business continuity and flexible working.
The importance of this marketplace is reflected by its size. As of early 2003, estimates of the United States market range from 1.5 to 4 billion dollars. Clients for ASP services include businesses, government organizations, non-profits, and membership organizations.
CyPace Hosting offers a wide range of hosted application, or can work with your organization to develop a hosted solution for your custom application.
ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode is a networking based on cells instead of frames. ATM is able to support multiple service types (such as voice, video, or data) are transmitted in fixed-length (53-byte) cells. Fixed-length cells allow cell processing to occur in hardware, tehereby reducing transit delays. ATM is designed to take advantage of high-speed transmission media such as E3, SONET, and T3. The ATM Software Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) allows routers to carry voice and data traffic over ATM networks using AAL2 and AAL5.
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) - This is the standard for the code numbers used by computers to represent all the upper and lower-case Latin letters, numbers, punctuation, etc. There are 128 standard ASCII codes each of which can be represented by a 7 digit binary number: 0000000 through 1111111, plus parity.
ActiveX - ActiveX is a set of properties that specify in what way applications share information with each other. These properties are known as ActiveX Controls.
Aliased Nameserver - An aliased nameserver is one that has been labeled as your own except that it is actually owned by your web hosting provider. This allows domains hosted on your server are listed as "ns.your-domain.com" rather than "ns.your-providers-domain.com". Aliased nameservers are often offered with reseller accounts.
Apache - A web server program. Apache is one of the world's most popular web server programs, it was built and is maintained by a group of open source programmers and it is often used because of it's excellent performance, security features and that it is free.
CyPace Hosting offers the apache web server on all Linux hosting plans.
